  Sudatta

Thailand

Sudatta, known in Thai as Suthatta Setthih, is the name at birth of Anathapindika, i.e. Anathabinthika Setthi in Thai. He was a wealthy merchant during the era of the  Buddha, who generously supported the Buddha and his monastic community throughout his life. The suffix Setthi to his name means ‘wealthy person’ or ‘millionaire’.

As the Buddha's greatest lay benefactor and patron (fig.), he is here depicted with a bowl of gold bars and coins, whilst making an offering gesture with his hand.
