Sahn Chao Pho Sitthichai
is a sacred shrine in
Ayutthaya
made of golden
teakwood,
believed to house the spirit of the royal son of
Queen
Sunandha Kumarirat
(fig.),
the fifth consort of King
Rama V.
The queen tragically died on 31 May 1880 in a boating
accident while en route to the Royal Summer Palace
(fig.) in
Bang Pa-in,
five months pregnant. The name Sitthichai, meaning
‘Victory of Righteousness’ or ‘Victory of Merit,’ refers
to the unborn prince who perished with his mother.
