  Sahn Chao Pho Sitthichai

Thailand

Sahn Chao Pho Sitthichai is a sacred shrine in Ayutthaya made of golden teakwood, believed to house the spirit of the royal son of Queen Sunandha Kumarirat (fig.), the fifth consort of King Rama V. The queen tragically died on 31 May 1880 in a boating accident while en route to the Royal Summer Palace (fig.) in Bang Pa-in, five months pregnant. The name Sitthichai, meaning ‘Victory of Righteousness’ or ‘Victory of Merit,’ refers to the unborn prince who perished with his mother.
