The
Reua
Phra Thihnang Ananta Nagaraat,
one of the main
Royal Barges,
on the
Chao Phraya
River in
Bangkok,
for the
final rehearsal for the
Royal Barge Procession
in support of the
Royal Kathin Ceremony
at
Wat Arun (fig.) on 9 November 2012.
It has a prow in the form of
Ananta,
the seven-headed serpent and king of the
nagas,
i.e.
nagaraat (fig.). The figurehead is
painted with
gilded lacquer and ornamented with
small mirrors, whilst the flanks of the outside hull are
painted dark green. This barge measures 42.95 in length
and at about two-thirds of its length towards the stern
there is a small
mondop-style
ganya, that houses
the royal Kathin robes or an important Buddha image,
depending on the occasion. During processions it is fitted with
seven multi-layered umbrellas called
chattra, i.e. four before the mondop-style
shelter and three behind it.
