  Po Lin Monastery

The giant Tian Tan Buddha at the Zen Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island, near Hong Kong. This big Buddha is 34 meters tall and is made of bronze.

 

Its name derives from the eponymous Temple of Heaven in Beijing, because it is built on top of a mountain, a symbol of heaven, and its base or altar is modeled after that of the Altar of Heaven (fig.). At the bottom of the stairs stands a paifang, i.e. the temple's memorial archway (fig.).
