PROVINCIAL ESCUTCHEON

Narathiwat

The coat of arms of Narathiwat shows a sailing boat with the logo of a White Elephant on its sail with sun rays in the background. It refers to its location on the east coast, where the sun rises, and to its connection with both the sea (the sailboat) and the land (the elephant). The elephant also became part of the seal to commemorate Phra Sri Nararat Rajakarini, a White Elephant that was caught in the area and consequently presented to the king. Previously the escutcheon of this province showed only some rubber trees, emphasizing just one theme for which the area is known.
