Crested Serpent Eagle
Name
of an approximately 75 centimeter tall bird of prey with the binomial
name Spilornis cheela and found in South, East and Southeast Asia.
Adults have dark brown upperparts and pale brown underparts and
underwing coverts, whilst the tail and underside of the flight feathers
are black with broad white bars. The legs are grayish yellow with black
claws. Due to the shape of its head, as well as the yellow eyes and
their positioning, this medium-sized raptor has a certain owl-like
appearance, especially when perching. As its name suggests, Crested
Serpent Eagles are reptile eaters, that feed on snakes and lizards. In
Thailand, this bird is known by the name
yiyaw rung (เหยี่ยวรุ้ง).
