Ashy Drongo

Common name for a medium-sized passerine bird in the drongo family, Dicruridae, and with the binomial name Dicrurus leucophaeus. It is characterized by its predominantly grey plumage, with black primaries and a forked tail, a blackish face and a white patch around the eyes. This species is widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia, from the Indian subcontinent to China and Indonesia, and is known for its adaptability to various habitats, including forests, open woodlands, and urban areas. The Ashy Drongo is an agile flyer and skilled insect hunter, often catching prey mid-air. It is also known for its aggressive behavior in defending its territory, sometimes even mobbing larger birds of prey. This species exhibits some variation in plumage shade across its range, with several recognized subspecies. Some populations are migratory, particularly those breeding in northern parts of their range. In Thai, it is known as nok saeng saew sih thao (นกแซงแซวสีเทา). WATCH VIDEO and VIDEO (E).
