  Mei Ran Gong (Kuan U)

The red-faced deified General Kuan U is traditionally portrayed as a warrior with a lush long black beard. He is traditionally placed on the far left of the main temple shrine, while on the right is his counterpart Wei Tuo (fig.). Here, he is portrayed stroking his beard with one hand and holding a book in the other, a pose known as Mei Ran Gong, which freely translates as ‘Lord with the Beautiful Beard’.
