Giant River Prawns have a grey and pale greenish-blue to purple shell, and while small males have nearly translucent claws, prawns in the intermediate stage have mostly orange claws.

Full-grown adult males have large, mostly blue claws, with chelipeds that may grow twice the size of their bodies.
