  flag of Malaysia

Malaysia

The flag of Malaysia consists of 14 stripes in alternating red and white, and a blue canton with a yellow crescent and a 14-pointed star.

The number 14 refers to the 13 member states of the federation plus an additional stripe and point in the star for the federal government in Kuala Lumpur, which was designated a Federal Territory (before 1965 there were 14 states, including Singapore), while the crescent represents Islam, the nation's official religion. The equal width of the stripes is said to refer to the equal status of each entity.
