This perennial, evergreen, rhizomatous subshrub, bearing the botanical name Russelia equisetiformis, is commonly known as the Firecracker Plant. It owes its name to the striking visual effect created by its numerous slender, arching stems, which are covered in small, tubular, bright red flowers resembling cascades of exploding firecrackers (fig.).
