Chinese ink sticks decorated with golden reliefs. They are made from soot, a black powdery deposit from smoke (lampblack), and binders. This powder is solidified into hard sticks for easier transport and preservation.

The ink stick can be made liquid by rubbing it with some water on an inkstone (fig.), until the right degree of density is achieved.
