Female Black Hornbills are overall black with white outer-tail tips, especially visible on the underside (fig.), and a blackish bill and casque, which is somewhat smaller than the yellowish white casque of males.

They have a pinkish red sub-moustachial patch, as well as orbital skin, and their eyes may be yellowish or brown.
