In the in northwestern Laotian town of Luang Prabang, located along the Mae Khong River (fig.), the early morning alms round of local mendicant monks and novices has become something of a tourist attraction.

However, many tourists not only come to watch the daily ceremony, they also join in the alms-giving, thus effectively aiding in the support of this local community of clergy.
