Eugene Reytter

Belgian doctor of medicine, who was for 17 years the personal physician of King Chulalongkorn. He was also the founder of the first Thai pharmacy, as well as of the Thai Red Cross Society. The doctor came to Siam in 1895 on the invitation of Gustave Rolin-Jaequesmyns (fig.), the Belgian diplomat and adviser to King Rama V (fig.), after having worked as a physician in the Belgian Congo. Dr. Reytter's appointment as the personal physician to the King of Siam was continued under King Rama VI (fig.), who granted him the rank of Phraya Prasertsart Thamrong (พระยาประเสริฐศาสตร์ธำรง). Dr. Eugene Reytter and his wife Sophia left Siam in April 1911.
