  Scaly-breasted Munia (juvenile)

PREVIOUS BIRD NEXT BIRD Thailand

A juvenile Scaly-breasted Munia of the subspecies Lonchura punctulata topela (i.e. the nearby spotted parents had white underparts with distinctive brown scale markings), spotted in a Pattaya garden, in Chonburi province.

Juvenile birds lack the scaly markings of adults (fig.), and instead have uniform buff underparts, whilst their upperparts are pale brown.

This particular one was chased by a dog and flew straight into a swimming pool, yet was saved in time and consequently willingly posed for this picture. See also List of Thai Animal Names.
