  Phra Sri Sakyamuni

Thailand

The Phra Sri Sakyamuni Buddha image at Bangkok's Wat Suthat (fig.) was in 1808 transported from Sukhothai to Bangkok by raft, on the orders of Rama I. On arrival at Tha Chang Wang Luang, the large image could not pass through the then city gate, which was consequently demolished. After the image had passed, a new gate was built and named Pratu Tha Phra, i.e. ‘Buddha Wharf Gate’ or ‘Buddha Port Gate’.
