KRABI'S AO NANG BEACH

VIDEO DESCRIPTION

A short video on Phang Nga Bay in the Andaman Sea and Krabi's main beach Hahd Ao Nang (หาดอ่าวนาง), with its stunning Sailfish Monument, depicting the Indo-Pacific Sailfish or Marlin, i.e. a species of marine fish with the binomial name Istiophorus platypterus, that holds the record for the fastest swimming fish in the world, reaching speeds of 90 kilometers per hour. It is nicknamed the Queen of the Seas and is commonly found around the Phi Phi Islands in the Andaman Sea off Krabi. This fish has a large dorsal fin which it can raise, reminiscent of the sail of a boat and from which it gets its common name. It is dark blue above and silvery white below, and its upper jaw is elongated, resembling a spear, similar to Atlantic Sailfish (Istiophorus albicans), and other billfish, such as Marlin and Swordfish. In Thai, it is known as pla bai (ปลาใบ), pla kratohng thaeng rom (ปลากระโทงแทงร่ม) and pla kratohng rom (ปลากระโทงร่ม), the latter which loosely translates as ‘mustached umbrella stabbing fish’. Since Krabi means ‘sword’, the Sailfish, resembling Swordfish, became the symbol of this seaside province and features on the promenade along the beach of Ao Nang Bay in the form of a large bronze of two fishermen catching a Sailfish, a statue reminiscent of a similar bronze at Phi Phi Don, one of the Phi Phi Islands, whereas the street lights at both these locations are also adorned with Sailfish.
