  foot soles of the Buddha

Thailand

In iconography, the soles of a buddha statue, also observed in so-called footprints of the Buddha that are known as Buddhapada (fig.), show 108 auspicious signs, usually including seven of the Ashtamangala (fig.).

Typically, the Dhammachakka is larger than the other symbols and placed at the centre of the sole. The remaining symbols may include elephants, deer, rabbits, Erawan, books, fans, different kinds of water lilies, lotuses, golden bees, hongse, geese, alms bowls, besides some other auspicious animals and royal insignia. The symbols on these giant soles of the Reclining Buddha of Wat Poh (fig.), are intricately inlayed in mother-of-pearl.
