A Chinese Pond Heron with its long neck stretched out. It is in its winter or non-breeding plumage, in which the head and neck is light brown and streaked, the back brown, and the underparts white. This colouration is however similar to that of the Javan and Indian Pond Heron (fig.), making it almost indistinguishable in the field.
