Assamese Macaques in Hanoi Zoo. In Thai, this species of macaque is called ling wok phu khao, a name composed of ling wok, i.e. Thai for ‘Rhesus Macaque and phu khao, which means ‘mountain’.

This refers to the fact that it is an upland species, usually found at an altitude between 500 and 3,500 meters, and that it somewhat resembles the Rhesus Macaque (fig.), though larger and with a darker face, longer hair and a grey area around its bottom, rather than red.
