RELIGION & MYTHOLOGY

  nariphon

Thailand

The fabulous nariphon tree is said to grow only in the mythical Himaphan forest and to yield fruits in the shape of fairy-like beings. They are described as 16 year old girls, with very soft skins, akin to ripe maprahng plums (fig.)

They have large sapphire blue eyes with golden irises, 45 degrees falcate noses, golden hair with at the top a crown-like tuft, connecting eyebrows, and very flexible bodies as they have no skeleton, yet with all five sensual desires, i.e. shape, sound, smell, taste and feeling, just ideal. This mural from Wat Phrathat Suthon Mongkon Khiri (fig.) in Phrae, shows sages known as reusi (fig.) looking after the fruits of this wonderful tree.
