  bai makrud (kaffir leaves)

Kaffir leaves, called bai makrud  in Thai, typically grow vertically in pairs, one on top of the other, somewhat like the shape of a hourglass.

 

They are widely used in Thai cuisine for their aromatic qualities, both fresh and dried (fig.). Their upper surface is slightly darker their bottom. See also List of Thai Botanical Names.
