Thailand

Krathong, used in the festival of Loi Krathong, are originally (fig.) made with folded leaves of a banana plant (fig.), and are decorated with flowers, candles and incense sticks.

Later, less environmentally friendly materials, such as polystyrene foam, came into use to make the floating base of the krathong, which has led to avoidable water pollution.

As a consequence, a new form of krathong made of dough was developed, i.e. the so-called bread krathong, which eventually dissolves in the water and becomes food for the fish, a win-win solution.
