  banana inflorescence

Thailand

The inflorescence of a banana plant with its purple petals. In Thai, it is known as hua plih, and although it is edible, its taste is rather wry. In Thailand it is typically served fresh, sliced with Phad Thai (fig.), used to make a northern style squash soup, and as an ingredient for a kind of salad, similar to a dish found in Vietnam (fig.).
