  Treaty of Nanking

China

On 29 August 1842, the Qing's government signed the humiliating Treaty of Nanking with the British government, marking the end of the first Opium War. From then on, China gradually was downgraded to be a semi-colony and semi-feudal society, which by 1856 would lead to the second Anglo-Chinese War.
