HISTORY & MONARCHY

  Rama IV

Thailand

Statue of King Rama IV, the king who, interested by western ideas, modernised his realm and established diplomatic relations with the superpowers of his time. He devoted his spare time to the study of science and was in 1982 bestowed with the title Father of Thai Science.

This statue, which is also depicted on banknotes of 50 baht issued between 2005 and 2009, stands in front of the Ministry of Science and Technology in Bangkok, a tribute to the fact that this monarch was a self-made scholar interested in several western sciences.
