  Muchalinda

Thailand

Muchalinda, the king of nagas (fig.), is protecting the Buddha against heavy rain by making a cover with its multi-headed figure, whilst coiling its body under the Buddha, who was seated under a Taengwood Tree in deep meditation (fig.). This stone image was found in Thonburi and is sculpted in the Khmer Angkor Wat style from the 12th -13th century. Sometimes depicted with a Buddha in a bhumisparsa position (fig.).
