White Elephants' tribute to late King Rama IX

Thailand

On 9 November 2016, ca. one month after the demise of King Rama IX, on the day of the auspicious number nine, all 11 of His Majesty's White Elephants assembled at the Grand Palace with their respective mahouts dressed in black, as a tribute to the late King Bhumipon Adunyadet. One elephant was carrying a large portrait of the King with one of his late White Elephants (fig.) and another had a drummer on its back beating a klong thad (fig.).

The troop halted in front of the palace to sing the Royal Hymn Phleng Sansaroen Phra Barami and to pose for a photo shoot.
