  John McCain's fight suit

Vietnam

The original flight suit of fighter pilot Navy Lt-Cdr John McCain, including his fight helmet with oxygen mask (fig.), that he wore on 26 October 1967 when the later Arizona Republican Governor and US presidential candidate attacked the Yan Phu power plant in Hanoi during the Vietnam War.

In the attack, he was shot down by the Vietcong and crash-landed in Truc Bach Lake, opposite of West Lake near the Tran Quoc Pagoda (fig.). He survived the ordeal and was imprisoned in Hoa Lo Prison, now a museum that houses this flight suit, as well as other mementos of captured US POWs (fig.).
