Ruddy Shelducks near a hotel garden pool in Loei province. The bird in front is a male juvenile, the one in the back an adult male in breeding plumage.

 

In the breeding season, the male (in the back) has a black ring at the bottom of the neck, which is absent in the female (in the center). Females also have a paler head with a whiter face. The young male (in the front) has a less distinct neck-ring.
