In the capital of China, a peculiar exotic food market, commonly referred to as the Beijing Insect Market, has long been a daily evening attraction in Dong Hua Men Street, amid rumours that it will allegedly close down.

 

Besides invertebrates and a variety of creepy crawlies, also other exotic species, such as snakes and starfish, are on the menu, mostly skewered on bamboo sticks and referred to as satay (fig.).
