  Water Strider

Thailand

Among the Water Striders that occurs in Thailand are the Aquarius adelaidis (Gerris adelaidis), Cylindrostethus costalis (Humpbacked Skater), Limnometra matsudai (White-lined Pond Skater), and Metrocoris nigrofascioides (Banded Dwarf Skater). In Thai they all have the generic name jing joh nahm, which literally translates as ‘water kangaroo’, referring to their ability to walk on water using surface tension. Water Striders have brown to black bodies, which are usually corn-shaped.

They are predatory insects and are able to walk on the water surface of quiet waters and even slow streams. They can do so due to a special structure of tiny hairs on their legs, similar to those on the feet of the jingjok, and likwise called setae.
