  Bhadra (Bodhidurma)

Thailand

A stone sculpture of the luohan Bhadra portrayed with a beard and a sack on a stick, worn over his shoulder and in which he bears the sutras. He is also known by the name Bodhidurma, meaning bodhi tree. Some sources assert that this disciple was born underneath such a tree, the same as under which the Buddha attained Enlightenment, though it is likely that the name (also) is an allegory for his steadfastness in the Buddhist faith, like a tree (druma) of perfect knowledge (bodhi). In Vietnam, he may be seated on a mythical Rui Shi-like lion (fig.).
